The Office of Greenways & Trails, with help from the UF GeoPlan Center, is updating and prioritizing
the Recreational Trails Opportunity Maps. These maps will guide the development of the
Florida Statewide
Greenways & Trails System and determine eligibility for funding under the
Office of Greenways and Trails Land Acquisition Program.
This website is being used to update the Multi-use trail and Paddling trail Opportunity Maps, and to collect
public comment about the maps. The hiking map will be
updated by conforming it to the planning corridor for the congressionally designated Florida National Scenic Trail.
The process for updating the Opportunity Maps is as follows:
- Submission Cycle - March 10 - May 2: Trail planners from around the state submit suggestions and comments
for additions/ edits to the Opportunity Maps. Corridors and comments submitted during the submission cycle
were then reviewed by OGT Staff and compiled into a draft map, which can be viewed through this website.
- Public Comment Period - June 16 - July 14: The Draft Opportunity Maps are posted on this website for the
public to view and make comments on. Public meetings were also held around the state, in which the public was invited
to attend, review the maps, and make comments. Public comments are then reviewed by OGT Staff for potential inclusion
in the Opportunity Maps.
- Prioritize Opportunity Segments: The Opportunity Maps segments are prioritized using spatial analyses
which rank trail quality features in a systematic way.
- Florida Greenways & Trails Council Review of Maps: The Council will review the maps and decide on
approval/ adoption of the final prioritized opportunity maps.
