Important Trails Terminology

Before trails information is submitted, it is important to develop a common language of trails terminology to insure collection of the most current and consistent information.

  • EXISTING TRAIL: A trail (paved or unpaved) for hiking, biking, equestrian, multi-use (non motorized), or paddling use that is open to the public. This does not include in-road bike lanes or sidewalks. *Currently, this website is only collecting information on non-motorized trails.

  • EXISTING TRAILHEAD: A trail access point open to the public with a minimum of designated parking. A trail can have multiple trailheads.

  • TRAIL SEGMENT: An entire trail or portion thereof whose characteristics are consistent. For example, every segment will have the same surface for its entire length. Or every segment will have the same allowed trail uses for its entire length.
